About
. I was raised in a small town on the Columbia River, class of 12. In the winter, we would ski, the spring, play baseball, in the summer, swim in the river, and in the fall, play football. Mostly, we worked on the wheat ranches where I started weeding wheat fields when I was 10. Farming is a labor-intensive, time-consuming job, and it was usually 10–15-hour days. Being outside was so perfect except in snowstorms. In college, I played varsity Rugby and graduated with a degree in accounting. During the summers, I worked on farms and construction. I was an accountant for 6 years, but did not like being alone in a box all day, so at age 30 or “midlife” I quit my job and skied and backpacked Europe for several months. I met my wife in Ireland during that time, and we are 37 years strong. We lived on a farm and raised sheep and pigs with an occasional steer. Our kids would raise animals and were involved in 4-H.
